3-D Laser Mapping System to Preserve Australian Heritage

ST. LUCIA, Australia, April 16, 2013 — A mobile 3-D laser mapping system that collects detailed images of historic sites could help preserve some of Australia’s oldest and most culturally significant heritage sites. The Zebedee laser scanner, developed by Australia’s national science agency Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), swings back and forth on a spring to capture millions of detailed measurements, giving researchers the ability to map an environment in 3-D by simply walking through it. The system uses lidar sensing technology and specially designed software that converts...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
