LED Production Goes Bigger, Gets Better

LED makers strengthen the appeal of their products by adopting a semiconductor-industry-type approach to yield management, defect control and dedicated manufacturing equipment. Compared with semiconductor fabrication, LED production is still in its adolescence. Manufacturing yields remain extraordinarily low – in the region of 30 to 40 percent – according to a recent report by market analysis firm Yole Développement of Lyon, France. But there is change afoot as LED manufacturers transition to a more mature, semiconductor-industry kind of philosophy. Instead of...Read full article

    lithography
Lithography is a key process used in microfabrication and semiconductor manufacturing to create intricate patterns on the surface of substrates, typically silicon wafers. It involves the transfer of a desired pattern onto a photosensitive material called a resist, which is coated onto the substrate. The resist is then selectively exposed to light or other radiation using a mask or reticle that contains the pattern of interest. The lithography process can be broadly categorized into several...
    luminescence
Luminescence is the emission of light that occurs without the involved substance undergoing a significant increase in temperature. In other words, it is the production and emission of light by a material or substance, often as a result of electronic, molecular, or atomic transitions. Luminescence is a broad term that encompasses various phenomena, including fluorescence, phosphorescence, chemiluminescence, and bioluminescence: Fluorescence: In fluorescence, a substance absorbs light...
    quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
