ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 1, 2013 — A recent infusion of $1 million from a private investor will allow IRradiance Glass Inc. to expand its manufacturing facility at the University of Central Florida, the company said this week. IRradiance Glass makes chalcogenide glasses, which are transparent in the infrared spectrum, for infrared optical components and optical systems used in security and defense, medicine and environmental sensing, among other applications. The company has four employees, and its manufacturing operations are in the physics department at UCF. "All products and systems that utilize infrared light,...Read full article

    Glossary
    chalcogenide
Chalcogenide refers to a class of compounds containing elements from group 16 of the periodic table, which includes sulfur (S), selenium (Se), and tellurium (Te). These elements are known as chalcogens. Chalcogenides are typically formed by combining one or more chalcogens with other elements, such as metals or metalloids. Chalcogenides are of particular interest in materials science and technology due to their unique properties, which include: Semiconductor behavior: Many chalcogenides...
    infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
    optical component
One or more optical elements – typically cemented together - in an optical system that are treated as a single group; e.g., a beamsplitter, or a cemented doublet or triplet.
    optical system
A group of lenses, or any combination of lenses, mirrors and prisms, so constructed as to refract or reflect light to perform some definite optical function.
