  • Fianium Awarded R&D Projects Worth $2.1M
Oct 2013
SOUTHAMPTON, England, Oct. 20, 2013 — Fianium was recently awarded three research and development projects by the UK government worth approximately £1.35 ($2.1 million) to develop its ultrafast and supercontinuum fiber lasers for high-volume industrial and medical applications, the company said last week.

The projects are in collaboration with research groups at the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials (CPPM) at the University of Bath and at Southampton University's Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). The funding is provided under the UK Technology Strategy Board's SMART plan, which offers funding to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for projects that have the potential to stimulate economic growth in the UK.

The projects will help Fianium streamline its product development program and commercialize its fiber lasers, CEO Anatoly Grudinin said.

fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
