CENTER VALLEY, Pa., Oct. 23, 2013 — Olympus Medical Systems Group of Olympus America has launched the TGF-UC180J, a curvilinear videoscope based on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for treating gastrointestinal diseases. Whereas in conventional ultrasound a transducer is placed against the skin to produce images of internal organs, with EUS gastrovideoscopy a device is inserted into the body via the digestive tract, putting it closer to the region of interest.
The device’s forward-viewing optics make it a suitable interventional tool. Compared with its oblique-viewing counterparts, it offers a shorter distal tip and wider angulation capabilities for better maneuverability. The scope’s straight channel enables therapeutic devices to be delivered directly to the target site. An auxiliary water jet provides acoustic coupling, saving accessory costs by eliminating the need for a balloon.
The scope is backward-compatible with prior-generation processors, including the Olympus EU-ME1 and Hitachi Aloka SSD-a10. It is 510(k) compliant.
