Photonics Industries Expands

BOHEMIA, N.Y., Nov. 8, 2013 — To meet increasing demand in the industrial and scientific markets for its diode-pumped solid-state laser products, Photonics Industries International Inc. has purchased another building less than two miles from its Bohemia headquarters, the company said this week.

The 67,000-sq-ft building in Ronkonkoma is adjacent to MacArthur ISP airport, the company said, and has 6000 sq ft of cleanroom space. Photonics Industries says it will more than double that by adding approximately 8000 sq ft of new cleanroom facilities as part of its investment of more than $8 million in the new building.

Photonics Industries, founded in 1993 out of a Stony Brook University incubator, makes Q-switched intracavity solid-state harmonic lasers for mobile devices, communications systems and semiconductors.

In July, it was announced that Photonics Industries was expanding its operations in Islip and adding 40 new jobs.

Glossary
solid-state laser
A solid-state laser is a type of laser that uses a solid gain medium (as opposed to a liquid or gas) to produce coherent light. The term "solid-state" refers to the fact that the active medium, where the lasing action occurs, is a solid material. This material is typically a crystalline or glass-like substance doped with specific ions or atoms that can undergo stimulated emission to generate laser light. The basic components of a solid-state laser include: Gain medium: This is the solid...
