Jenoptik Laser Scanner to Monitor Traffic in Germany

BRAUNSCHWEIG & JENA, Germany, Nov. 8, 2013 — A Jenoptik laser scanner that monitors traffic has been approved for use in Germany by the Traffic Solutions Div. of the country's Physical Technical Institute.

Certification of its TraffiStar S350 laser scanner system marks the first time that police and local authorities can choose a noncontact stationary speed-measuring system that works without piezoelectric sensors or induction loops incorporated into the road surface, Jenoptik said.

It also means that "Jenoptik is the only manufacturer in the world offering all-important sensor technologies for traffic monitoring," said Jenoptik AG CEO Michael Mertin. "This allows Jenoptik to offer its customers in Germany and the rest of the world customized technologically flexible solutions."

The TraffiStar S350, which can distinguish between cars and trucks, can be used in road bends or where the road is unclear or obscured as well as in tunnels, the company said, and it has a measuring distance of only 10 m. Different phototrigger limits can be set for each lane and each vehicle class, and both driving directions and several lanes can be monitored simultaneously. The camera and flash technologies developed by Jenoptik for the system provide recognition of drivers and license plates.

Error-free matching of the calculated speed and the relevant vehicle is documented by marking the measured vehicle in the image. This marking is a frame overlaid on the image with the correct perspective and a field showing the measured speed, so the association between the recorded vehicle, the marking frame and the speed value are clearly visualized.
