Plasmons Show Useful Quantum Properties

PASADENA, Calif., April 4, 2014 — Surface plasmons could be a key piece of the ever-evolving quantum computing puzzle. A team from the California Institute of Technology has discovered a new approach to quantum computer development, which joins plasmons, rather than photons, with waveguides. Typically, such computing relies on the creation of two photons that interfere with one another in a waveguide. "Remarkably, plasmons are coherent enough to exhibit quantum interference in waveguides," said Harry Atwater, Howard Hughes professor of applied physics and materials science at CalTech, one of the researchers....Read full article
