Microsphere Exhibits Chip-Scale Lasing

Combining nanoplasmonic devices and optical microresonators can produce laser-like light emission, potentially paving the way for power-on-a-chip applications. “We have made optical systems at the microscopic scale that amplify light and produce ultranarrowband spectral output,” said Dr. J. Gary Eden, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “These new optical amplifiers are well-suited for routing optical power on a chip containing both electronic and optical components.” The researchers used a...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
