Plasmonic Nanowire Shows Promise as Photonic Circuit

A new kind of nanowire efficiently guides both light and electricity. A team from the University of Rochester and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology developed a basic photonic integrated circuit consisting of a silver nanowire and a single-layer flake of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The concept could translate to computer chips capable of transporting digital information at the speed of light. MoS2 is made up of layers that are weakly bonded to each other, so they can be easily separated. In bulk MoS2, electrons and photons interact as they would in traditional...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
