Experimental results from a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer elucidate the effects of active vibration damping. Vibration presents a major challenge for precision experiments and manufacturing processes in optoelectronics. Optical tables and breadboards in various shapes and forms are the de facto standard of vibration control. They rest on soft isolators that effectively filter out vibration from the floor. However, other sources of disturbance – acoustic noise, atmospheric turbulence and onboard sources – still exist and may become prevalent vibration sources at higher...Read full article

    Glossary
    atmospheric turbulence
Irregularities and disturbances in the atmosphere that are of particular interest because they induce random temporal and spatial phase and amplitude fluctuations that destroy the optical quality and the coherence properties of laser beams.
    isolator
In the context of electronics and optics, an isolator refers to a device that allows the transmission of signals in one direction while attenuating or blocking signals in the opposite direction. The primary purpose of an isolator is to protect components or systems from undesired reflections and signals that may cause interference or damage. Two common types of isolators and their applications are: Electrical isolator: Function: An electrical isolator, also known as an electrical or power...
    optical table
An optical table, also known as an optical bench or an optical breadboard, is a specialized platform used in optics laboratories for mounting and aligning optical components. These tables provide a stable and vibration-resistant surface that minimizes external disturbances, ensuring precise alignment and measurement of optical elements. Optical tables are typically made of a rigid material such as steel or aluminum, with a honeycomb or ribbed internal structure to reduce weight while...
    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
