EDINBURGH, Scotland, January 20, 2015 — Optical wireless communications firm PureLiFi has raised £1.5 million from angel investors, bringing the startup’s total value to £14 million.

PureLiFi shipped its first fully wireless optical networking systems in the fourth quarter of 2014. The Li-Flame system turns standard LED fixtures into wireless Internet access points.

LiFi — a term coined by pureLiFi chief science officer and University of Edinburgh professor Dr. Harald Haas — provides networking capabilities similar to WiFi but with significantly greater bandwidth.

The new investors in PureLiFi are led by London & Scottish Investment Partners. Chairman Scott Carnegie said PureLiFi appealed to the group’s “goals of helping to accelerate growth and speed of development of a leading Scottish technology company in anticipation of an earlier exit and release of entrepreneurial wealth.”

Additional funding came from Old College Capital, the venture investment arm of the University of Edinburgh, and the Scottish Investment Bank, which provided seed capital at the company’s founding. The investment will be used to support the development of a product roadmap and for expanding marketing and sales.
