Metamaterial Hyperlens Breaks Diffraction Limit

A new metamaterial design has enabled a hyperlens capable of imaging details smaller than the wavelengths of visible light. Developed at The State University of New York at Buffalo, the new device relies on a nonresonant, waveguide-coupled design to overcome the losses previous hyperlenses suffered at optical wavelengths. "There is a great need in health care, nanotechnology and other areas to improve our ability to see tiny objects that elude even the most powerful optical systems," said Natalia Litchinitser, professor of electrical engineering at Buffalo. "The hyperlens we are...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
