Allow me to formally introduce myself.
After a stint as a news editor for Photonics.com, I stepped into the role of EuroPhotonics editor early this year. I hit the ground running, bringing with me more than 15 years of media experience, and am thrilled for the opportunity to look closely at the photonics industry in Europe.
I look forward to bringing you the most comprehensive, informative feature articles, as well as a broad range of the top industry news and research that is impacting the European market. Our mission is unchanged: to inform and educate, and to help you do your job.
In our cover story, contributing editor Marie Freebody reports on the shifting state of the lighting technology market. This sector is maturing, and as adoption of solid-state lighting technology changes – given the technology’s increased efficiency, significantly improved thermal cooling and the emergence of low price LED solutions – so, too, is the structure of the industry changing, page 26.
Also in this issue, Dr. Christian Wenzel, of Innolite GmbH, explains how ultraprecision machines can provide positioning and lathe centering of mounted lenses in high-performance optics production. Integrated software, coupled with high precision metrology, now provides more economical production in the field, page 30.
We illustrate how groundbreaking discoveries by revolutionary scientists Augustin-Jean Fresnel, Thomas Young and others have shaped the modern world of photonics. From technological innovations to ongoing education and training, the industry continues to advance throughout Europe, page 32.
And beginning on page 38, we feature a full preview of the 2015 Laser World of Photonics international trade fair and conference in Munich, held June 22 to 25.
Now I want to hear from you! I encourage you to share with me your thoughts, ideas and feedback – Justine.Murphy@photonics.com.
