Australia Opens Nanoscale Institute

The Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST) has opened at The University of Sydney. The institute is staffed by researchers working at the nanoscale in the fields of computing, communication, energy storage, biofuels, alloys and health.

AINST is headquartered at the $150 million Sydney Nanoscience Hub, which includes research labs, a research/prototype foundry and cleanroom, a transmission electron microscope suite, as well as teaching workspaces.

The institute’s five flagship projects are Measurement and Control at the Nanoscale, Quantum Simulation, Nanoscale Photonic Circuits, Energy and Environment, and Health and Medicine. Specific technologies to be addressed include quantum clocks and computers, photonic chips for computers and smartphones, and secure communications using single photons.
