CAIRO, Oct. 21, 2016 — Network solutions provider Ciena Corp. is supplying Egypt’s state-owned telephone company, Telecom Egypt Co. SAE, with its GeoMesh technology and packet-optical transport systems to enhance fiber-optic network connections between the Mediterranean and Asia.

The fiber network infrastructure upgrade project should enable Telecom Egypt to improve service delivery for its wholesale carrier, service provider, internet content provider and consortium customers. This includes the ability to deliver diverse data transit routes for international data center interconnect, disaster recovery, cloud-based services and other high-capacity offerings.

"Ciena's technology and mesh network give us a real advantage, ensuring greater reliability and efficiencies," predicted Tamer Gadalla, managing director and CEO of Telecom Egypt. "With Ciena enabling more granular high-bandwidth services, our customers can evolve their networks and transition to a much wider suite of resilient, scalable connectivity options. Telecom Egypt is also ready to embrace upcoming technologies like network functions virtualization."

Ciena says its GeoMesh technology will improve mesh restoration capabilities and therefore increase the resiliency of its network. The company's 6500 and 5430 packet-optical platforms, meanwhile, will provide high capacity and provisioning flexibility for optical transport network, virtual private networks, optical virtual private networks and Ethernet services.

Ciena is a supplier of telecommunications networking equipment, software and services.
