Mitsubishi Electric Unveils New LCD Module

(Newstream) June 5 -- The Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA Inc. introduced a new fast response 15-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) module, with its new Feed Forward Driving (FFD) technology being the centerpiece of the panel. The Angleview display, designed in conventional twisted nematic (TN) mode, offers faster display response time, high brightness, high color saturation and a wide viewing angle, making a breakthrough in the clarity of motion video and scrolling text, the company said. The new panel is designed for multimedia and LCD television applications.
    Before the introduction of FFD technology, manufacturers of TFT-LCDs had attempted to attain these levels of performance by developing new liquid crystal materials or exotic cell structures. This development process is costly and often has low yields, resulting in a more expensive end product. There are also tradeoffs with new LC materials, whereby cell response may be improved at the expense of contrast ratio or grayscale resolution. FFD technology is used with familiar, high-yield, TN mode TFT-LCD technology, thereby improving response time while maintaining a high contrast ratio and 8-bit grayscale resolution.
    Traditionally, LCD response time has been defined as the length of time required to go from a black image to a white image plus the time to go from a white image to a black image. Most modern TFT-LCDs can accomplish this in 25 to 45 ms. Unfortunately, this is the best-case scenario for a TFT-LCD, with intra-grayscale response time actually exceeding 84 ms. This is highlighted in the TFT-LCD response time chart shown in Figure 1 (please see downloadable graphic in the Assets column at right). Although the new FFD technology has little effect on black/white transitions, the intragrayscale response time improves significantly. Typical response time is less than 20 ms and many transitions are less than 10 ms.
