Jenoptik to Provide Traffic Control Camera Systems for Austrian Highways

Jenoptik AG has entered into an agreement with highway maintenance company Asfinag AG to provide 18 speed control systems for Austrian roads. The order is valued in the low two-digit million euro range.

The objective of the agreement is to continue to improve traffic safety in Austria and regulate traffic jam situations in critical areas such as construction zones and tunnels. Technologies include mobile and stationary TraffiSection speed control systems, which will be used in locations such as the A22 Kaisermühlen tunnel in Vienna.

Section speed control measures average speeds over an extended stretch of highway using measuring systems and cameras at entry and exit points. Every vehicle is registered at each control point and identified by its license plates.

If a vehicle's average speed over the section of highway exceeds the maximum permitted speed, a conventional high-resolution frontal photograph is taken when the vehicle exits the section of the highway. The system automatically records data such as the license plate and a photograph of the driver for use in prosecuting the violation.

Laser scanner-based technology also makes it possible to accurately identify drivers and document traffic offenses, creating records that are admissible in court.

Vehicle data is immediately anonymized after registration at the entry point. It is also impossible to recognize vehicle's passengers, as the vehicles are scanned in low resolution from the rear.
