Fiber optics specialist Phoenix Photonics Ltd. of South Croydon, UK, is participating in a European Union R&D project called Mode-Gap to investigate the technologies needed to achieve a hundredfold increase in the current capacity of telecommunications optical fiber-based networks. The company is focused on the critical components part of the project. The new fibers proposed – to facilitate spatial division multiplexing – demand a new range of components.
