Teledyne Dalsa 4K Cameras Power Sunday Night Football Replay System
Every sports fan loves the slow-motion replay, and soon Sunday Night Football fans will get to experience these instant replays with never-before-seen views of action on the field.
Teledyne Dalsa has partnered with Replay Technologies of Newark, Calif., to provide its cameras and frame grabbers for deployment in Replay’s freeD sports replay system at AT&T Stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium) in Arlington, Texas.
FreeD (free dimensional video) records reality with powerful cameras and sophisticated algorithms, not as regular 2-D video, but as a true 3-D scene, enabling the production team — and in the near future the actual viewers — to freely roam around a captured scene where no physical camera exists.

Twenty-four of Teledyne Dalsa’s high-resolution Falcon2 cameras will be positioned around AT&T Stadium to capture images for freeD replays during NBC Sunday Night Football’s broadcast of the Dallas Cowboys’ home opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 8.
Twelve cameras will be positioned around each end’s red zone — the area of the field between the 20-yard line and the goal line. The camera’s 12-megapixel, 4K resolution will enable the system to capture close-ups in high-definition quality.
Teledyne Dalsa’s Xcelera frame grabbers are being installed in the stadium’s control room to capture the camera data for interfacing with the freeD system.
“Being able to seamlessly move from side to side and around an entire play without switching shots will entertain and inform the fans in Cowboys Stadium and the national TV audience on NBC,” said Fred Gaudelli, producer of NBC Sunday Night Football. “Fans will think they’re playing a video game or watching a sci-fi movie, but they’ll actually be viewing real NFL football as never presented before.”
The freeD system was first used in 2012 at the Players Championship PGA golf tournament and at the 2012 London Olympic Games gymnastics competition. The system is currently deployed at Yankee Stadium and is a regular feature of Yankees home games broadcasted by the YES Network, with an average of 30-s rendering time.
