Gooch & Housego Acquires Constelex Technology Enablers

Gooch & Housego (G&H) Plc has acquired Constelex Technology Enablers Ltd., an Athens, Greece-based manufacturer of advanced photonic systems. The acquisition is the optical components and systems maker's second in as many months.

The privately held Constelex designs, manufactures and markets optical fiber amplifiers and lasers for telecommunications, sensing and defense applications. The purchase will allow Gooch & Housego to develop a higher-added-value capability at the subsystems and systems level, the company said.

In February, Gooch & Housego established the Systems Technology Group (STG) at its Torquay facility. The group functions as a separate business unit to design, develop and prototype systems-level products via a multidisciplinary team with expertise in mechanical, electronic, and software design and modeling.

The Constelex acquisition significantly expands the capabilities of the STG and will enable G&H to contribute to the ESA Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) European Component Initiative. It also moves G&H closer to its objective of becoming a leader in space photonics by designing and manufacturing space-qualified hardware in the US and Europe.

G&H recently increased manufacturing capacity and office space at the Torquay plant to accommodate the growing STG.

In October, the company also announced it was expanding its capabilities in infrared optics and coatings by acquiring Scotland-based precision optical components manufacturer Spanoptic Ltd.
