Gooch & Housego, Photonics21 Launch Horizon 2020
ILMINSTER, England, April 1, 2014 — Gooch & Housego and Photonics21 have launched Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme’s largest research and innovation project.
With €80 billion (about $110 billion) in funding available over the next seven years, the program, led by Gooch & Housego, will enable development of increased efficiencies in satellite communications, materials processing and medical diagnostics.
Scientists also hope to craft solutions to major economic and social challenges currently facing Europe, including improving resource efficiency in food, energy and security.
“Photonics are at the heart of the Horizon 2020 program,” said Gareth Jones, CEO of Gooch & Housego. “The main strands of development will focus on improving efficiencies in areas such as fiber laser-based manufacturing, data communication and medical diagnostic technology.”
