Daylight Solutions, Thorlabs Partner on QCL Projects

Daylight Solutions Inc. and Thorlabs will work together to develop quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) for defense and security applications.

Meanwhile, Thorlabs recently acquired Corning Inc.’s QCL business and associated optical semiconductor technologies research group, which produces QCLs for sensing, scientific and defense markets. Daylight Solutions has collaborated with Corning on QCLs for the last six years. Thorlabs Quantum Electronics will integrate the Corning assets into its facility in Jessup, Md.

Daylight Solutions develops laser-based mid-infrared molecular spectroscopy and imaging systems for scientific research, life sciences, industrial process control and defense.

Thorlabs manufactures a variety of photonic components including semiconductor lasers, towers for drawing glass optical fibers, crystals and thin films.

Glossary
quantum cascade laser
A quantum cascade laser (QCL) is a type of semiconductor laser that operates based on the principles of quantum mechanics. It is a versatile and powerful device used for emitting coherent light in the mid-infrared to terahertz range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Quantum cascade lasers were first proposed by Federico Capasso, Jerome Faist, Deborah Sivco, Carlo Sirtori, Albert Hutchinson, and Alfred Cho in 1994. Key features and principles of quantum cascade lasers: Quantum cascade...
