Sensors Expo logoPhotonics Media will chair a conference track on optical sensing and detection during the Sensors Expo & Conference next month.

The session begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, in Room 101 A at the Long Beach Convention Center. Topics include deformation and strain measurement, fiber optic position sensing, characterizing industrial fluids with sensors based on MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), and sensors in plastic electronics for Industry 4.0.

Speakers include Laurent Jamet, director of business development at ISORG of France; John Tyson, president of Trilion Quality Systems LLC of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; Jon Mabe of IK4-Tekniker of Spain; Anartz Unamuno of the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems in Germany; and Robert Rickenbach, president and chief engineer of Micronor Inc. of Newbury Park, Calif.

Photonics Media is an industry sponsor of Sensors Expo, which begins June 9.

Other events include keynote presentations by Gadi Amit, the technology designer behind projects such as Google Project Ara, Fitbit fitness trackers and the Lytro camera, and by Mike North, the host of three Discovery Channel programs.

"The sensors market is poised for explosive growth in 2015 and beyond," North said. "To keep pace with this rapid growth rate, the Sensors conference offers an ideal opportunity to educate and inspire the engineering community on the critical technologies that will transform not only key business processes, but how we live our lives today."

North has a doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His work has appeared in scientific journals including Nature. The host of "Prototype This," "Outrageous Acts of Science" and "In The Making," North will speak June 10 at 9 a.m. about following one's intuition to try new ideas and create rapid prototypes.

Amit will speak June 11 at 9 a.m. about why emotional intelligence is just as important in the new sensing era as rational thinking and what's around the corner.

Sensors Expo features more than 65 dedicated conference sessions on technology areas including energy harvesting, sensors at work, smart cities, wireless and wearables, as well as nearly 200 exhibitors showcasing applications in aerospace and more.
