Quantum Imaging, SemiConductor Devices Secure Funding for SWIR Camera Development

Quantum Imaging Inc. of Colorado and SemiConductor Devices of Israel will develop a next-generation short-wave infrared (SWIR) camera with funding from the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation. The total project cost is about $1 million.

Traditionally, the use of SWIR cameras has been limited to a very small number of applications such as military vehicles and high-end laboratory studies because the cost of a single camera can exceed $40,000.

The new SWIR camera will be smaller, lighter, use less power and cost substantially less, the company said, making it applicable in a number of new markets including silicon wafer inspection, commercial aviation, firefighting, agricultural inspection, homeland security and defense.

Quantum Imaging Inc. develops camera spanning the spectrum from x-rays to SWIR. SemiConductor Devices develops detectors for the complete IR spectrum and recently introduced its first SWIR detector based on InGaAs.
