Dynasil Unit Wins $3M for Nuclear Detectors

The RMD Research, a subsidiary of Dynasil Corp. of America, received $3.65 million in contracts to develop nuclear detectors from the Department of Homeland Security’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO).

The contracts will foster Dynasil’s continued research and development of gamma and neutron radiation detectors capable of identifying illicit nuclear materials. The contracts consist of $2.15 million under the DNDO’s Exploratory Research Program (ERP) and $1.5 million under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

The ERP’s goal is to fund the investigation of nuclear detection concepts from feasibility evaluation through proof of concept demonstration. The SBIR contract is intended to stimulate technological innovation of nuclear threat detection programs and to increase private sector commercialization derived from R&D funding.

Earlier this year, RMD Research was named a 2011 Department of Homeland Security small-business winner for radiation and nuclear detection.

Dynasil Corp. of America manufactures detection, sensing and analysis technology, precision instruments and optical components for the homeland security, industrial and medical markets.
