Entries for ASD Inc.’s 2013 Alexander Goetz Instrument Support Program award are being accepted until Oct. 15, the company announced Wednesday.

The award, now in its seventh year, is named for the company’s co-founder and chief scientist, who spearheaded the development of remote sensing and imaging spectrometry nearly 40 years ago. Referred to as “the father of hyperspectral imaging,” Goetz continues to play a significant role in advancing portable instrumentation for field spectroscopy research applications, the company said.

Winners will be selected for creative research projects that apply reflectance spectroscopy to advance understanding in their fields of study. Selected doctoral and master’s candidates will have access to advanced field spectroscopy tools, including the FieldSpec 4 and HandHeld 2 spectroradiometers.

Award recipients whose completed paper is published by an approved journal are eligible to receive up to $500 toward publication charges and/or reimbursement of travel costs for oral or poster presentations of accepted abstracts at relevant scientific conferences.

“ASD is proud to support some of the brightest minds around the world through this program,” Goetz said. “We’ve seen a very broad range of innovative research topics submitted over the past several years. It’s encouraging as a fellow scientist to know that the research community has benefited through the success of the students selected to participate in this program.”

The Goetz program is sponsored by ASD and the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, a member organization of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

ASD provides high-performance analytical instrumentation and materials analysis solutions.

Glossary
hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
remote sensing
Remote sensing is a method of data collection and observation where information about objects, areas, or phenomena on Earth's surface is gathered from a distance, typically using sensors onboard satellites, aircraft, drones, or other platforms. This technique enables the monitoring and analysis of Earth's surface and atmosphere without direct physical contact. Remote sensing systems capture electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light, infrared, microwave, or radio waves) reflected or...
