Shoei Chemical Acquires Quantum Dot Business from Nanosys

TOKYO, Sept. 11, 2023 — Advanced materials manufacturer Shoei Chemical Inc., together with its North American subsidiary, Shoei Electronic Materials, has completed a definitive asset purchase agreement with Nanosys to acquire substantially all the assets associated with the Nanosys quantum dot business. Per the deal, the Tokyo-based company and its Oregon-based subsidiary will acquire Nanosys’ sales and marketing teams, quantum dot R&D team, and Silicon Valley laboratories. Shoei will continue to operate the Nanosys brand, retaining its identity as a supplier of quantum dot materials.

The move comes less than one year after micro-LED-based chip-to-chip interconnects manufacturer Avicena acquired a micro-LED fabrication facility and associated engineering team from Nanosys.

Glossary
quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
