A new beginning at SEMI India was on the cards, given that Debashish Chowdhury has now taken over. There was a meeting with SEMI India last week, where the thrust was clearly on solar. The meeting introduced a whole lot of new faces. Some of the key participants at the meeting included S.R.C. Sathyanarayan of TUV India, Amit Joshi of MAG-IAS India, A. Timeled Lighting Manufacturing is a new LED lighting brand name in China. It originally established as a manufacturer in 2006. At the beginning, it was combined with a trading company. According to David Zhu, sales manager of Timeled, the company did manufacture LED lamps for oversea marketing but was prevented from directly dealing with overseas customers as per the agreement. Now that the agreement has expired, Timeled has been founded. That is a welcome addition to China's growing clout! New Delhi, India-based Moser Baer recently added a feather on its illustrious cap when it emerged as the first ever Indian solar PV company to achieve 100 MW of installations globally under its own brand – a feat that has done the country proud! This achievement also makes Moser Baer one of the most preferred solar brands for solar farm developers. I recall reading somewhere on the Internet that Avatar, the 2010 Hollywood blockbuster by James Cameron, had a budget Rs. 1,200 crore (approximately US $260 million). First, the big news from India! NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. (NVVN) recently put out the list of selected solar projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru-National Solar Mission (JN-NSM). In all, there will be 37 projects in phase 1, batch 1. I am sure most of you are aware of India's JN-NSM. If not, let me again refresh your memories. Late last year, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had released the JN-NSM document, which aims at building India's energy future – with a huge thrust on solar PV. Although I have shown off my home LED lamps several times, I still get queries such as why is the LED light better than traditional light? For such folks: One, LED light is directional, making it suitable for spotlights as well as flashlights/torches, etc. Also, LEDs do not need any warm up time life the CFLs. Next, they are really energy efficient, have extremely small carbon footprint and, well, longer lifetimes. One such great example I can think of is the Pollux, a fashionable and functional LED panel light series developed by Taiwan-based GlacialLight, a subdivision of GlacialTech. I was recently contacted by Jeff, the export manager of HCC Technology, based in Baoan, Shenzhen, in mainland China. According to the company, it has recently introduced a newly designed LED T8 tube lighting, which it calls as the B-type LED tube. Model HCC-T812-SS20-03N is a 4-ft, 1200 × 30-mm tube. This tube boasts a structure that is half aluminum and half PC tube. The supplier claims that this LED tube can easily pass the 2960-V high-pot test. The supplier has made use of "D" type aluminum base. It is based on HCC's special design, which the company claims allows the LED tube to really have a good heat dissipating ability.
