Ultraslim Flexible Willow Glass

CORNING, N.Y., June 7, 2012 — Corning Inc. has launched Corning Willow Glass, an ultraslim glass that will help enable new, thinner applications and that could revolutionize display manufacturing as well as the shape and form of next-generation consumer electronic technologies.

The thinness, strength and flexibility of the glass could allow displays to be “wrapped” around a device or structure. It can be processed at temperatures up to 500 °C and will enable high-temperature, continuous “roll-to-roll” processes.

The glass can support thinner backplanes and color filters for OLEDs and LCDs in portable devices such as smartphones, tablets and notebook computers. It will help develop conformable curved displays for immersive viewing or mounting on nonflat surfaces.

It performs well for electronic components such as touch sensors, and it leverages glass’s natural hermetic properties as a seal for OLED displays and other moisture- and oxygen-sensitive technologies.

The 100-μm-thick glass is produced using a proprietary fusion process. It provides hermetic sealing to sensitive components, and good optical, thermal and surface properties.

Developed as an advanced display substrate, it will eventually be used in lighting and flexible solar cells.
