LONG BEACH, Calif., May 22, 2007 -- Samsung Electronics is exhibiting display products and concept prototypes at the 45th annual Society for Information Display (SID) 2007 exhibition, being held this week in Long Beach, Calif., including a 40-in LCD TV with LED backlight, the recipient of this year’s SID Gold Award for Display of the Year.

The display delivers a contrast ratio of 10,000:1,  five times higher than that of LCD panels with a CCFL backlight. Color saturation is also 105 percent of the NTSC standard.

"These improvements are helping to put LCD TVs with an LED backlight into the market mainstream, and the award recognizes this fact," Samsung said in a statement.

It is also exhibiting a 70-in. LCD display that refreshes motion picture images at twice the speed of conventional 60-Hz models, featuring its 120-Hz McFiTM (motion-compensated frame interpolation) technology. This doubles the number of frames per second, making moving images "crystal clear," Samsung said.

Also being shown is an A4-sized/14.3-in. diagonal color “electronic paper” (e-paper), a plastic, flexible display that can deliver undistorted color images, even on a bent surface, and continues to show a static image after power has been shut off. For this “concept” model, 130 °C low-temperature amorphous (noncrystalline) silicon processing is used to prevent distortion of the plastic substrate.

The company is also unveiling a 40-in. EPD (electrophoretic display) that can be used to create extra-large digital information displays (DIDs) with HD resolution (1,366 x 768 pixels). It consumes very little power: 300 mW at one frame per minute -- 1/500 that of a conventional LCD display.

Other products include a 24-in. LCD monitor panel with LED backlight, with room for two A4 pages side-by-side and two more inches for the Windows Vista sidebar panel, and a double-sided 2.22-in. LCD panel for mobile phones.
