An RGB LED illuminator for transmitted light illumination in upright microscopes has been launched by Tofra Inc. The computer-controlled device produces bright, uniform and diffuse light for near-Koehler illumination and acquires color images from monochrome digital cameras with full noninterpolated color at every pixel. Red, green and blue colors can be switched on and off in <1 ms, individually or in any combination. Adjusting the focus position individually for each color improves image quality. The unit has no moving or serviceable parts and creates no vibration, noise or heat. It can be controlled by sending command strings to the serial port or via the provided software.
