fluorescence decay system

A device, also called a fluorescence lifetime instrument, that measures decay curves of fluorescing samples. It generally consists of a gated pulsed flashlamp or a cavity dumped dye laser synchronously pumped by a mode-locked ion laser as a light source, yielding pulses nanoseconds in duration; an optical subsystem incorporating a monochromator; a sample chamber; and a photomultiplier with broadband photon-counting characteristics. Used in characterizing quenching mechanisms, energy transfer, rotational motion, excited-state kinetics, photochemical reactions and excimer and exciplex formation.
