New Scale Technologies Inc. has released the M3-LS linear smart stage for use in handheld or portable OEM instruments for high-resolution radio-frequency tuning, precision photonics, laser beam targeting, unmanned aerial/ground vehicle controls, miniature cameras, metrology and biomedical automation.

The 28 × 20 × 9.5-mm USB stage offers 0.5-µm resolution, less than 10-µm run-out and 1-mrad pitch and yaw over its 6-mm travel range. It supports side loads of up to 20 g without loss of speed and without a separate bearing or guide mechanism.

The stage integrates a high-resolution Squiggle piezoelectric micromotor, low-friction bearing guide, position sensor, microprocessor and firmware. Proprietary Pathway PC software provides an intuitive graphical interface to control multiple stages from a single screen, and a script generator creates command sequences for automated operation.
