Ophir Photonics has announced the newest version of BeamWatch, a noncontact focus-spot size and position monitor for high-power YAG and fiber lasers used in materials processing applications such as automotive and aerospace manufacturing.

Featuring an algorithm that optimizes the measurement window, the system requires no manual judgments. It makes a complete set of measurements at camera update rates, measuring the Rayleigh scatter caused by the beam. This provides readings of focus-spot size and beam position as well as dynamic measurements of focal plane location at 60-ms intervals during process startup.

The system has no power restrictions and has been tested on high-power lasers up to 100 kW. It is suitable for use with YAG, disc, fiber and diode lasers in the 980- to 1080-nm range.
