Edmund Optics ultrafast dispersing prismUltrafast dispersing prisms from Edmund Optics Inc. are designed to meet the demands of ultrashort-pulse laser systems.

Available with a range of dispersive properties, the prisms may be used to introduce negative or positive dispersion, depending on their alignment. Negative dispersion cancels the effects of other dispersive optical elements, while positive dispersion stretches the pulse in time for high-power ultrafast applications, mitigating the risk of damage to sensitive optical components.

The ultrafast dispersing prisms can be used inside optical cavities for dispersion compensation caused by light passing through fixed-cavity optics. When the prisms are used outside the cavity, they are used to manipulate pulse characteristics.

The prisms are polished at Brewster's angle to minimize reflection loss.

They are available in three 25.4 × 25.4-mm versions. The LaKL21 model features a group velocity dispersion (GDV) of 600 fs2/cm. An SF10 model features a GDV of 1600 fs2/cm, while a UV fused silica version features a GDV of 350 fs2/cm.
