A compact and rugged 1-W 650-nm laser has been released by Elk Industries. The high-power semiconductor Model 6501 produces a collimated output beam that is slightly elliptical and rectangular in shape in the near field, yet very concentrated in the far field.

Applications include laser microscopy, genetic research, laser ablation and laser ablation spectroscopy, materials science, pumping of other laser materials such as Cr:LiSAF, security and laser communications.

For applications such as laser displays and demonstrations, laser light shows, playback of holograms and full-color projection systems, the device provides an economical way to generate high-power radiant flux in a medium red color. And, because of its ruggedness and compact size, it can be shipped or transported safely to various locations.

It consumes <5 W of electricity. For use in education (of optics, for instance), the laser can demonstrate refraction, reflectance, speed of light in various mediums, optical communications, laser modulation, and "how to" build telescopes and microscopes.

It can be modulated by a transistor-transistor logic input signal of up to 10 KHz, via a standard bayonet Neill Concelman connection. It comes fully certified as FDA/CDRH/IEC-compliant, with the required labels, emission delay, key control, beam attenuator, emission indicator, distribution records and reporting to the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), as well as with a user instruction manual with reference to the applicable ANSI standards and CDRH regulations.

It provides maintenance-free operation for >100,000 h at its rated output and measures 114.3 × 228.6 × 101.6 mm. There are ¼-20 threaded mounting holes on the bottom and top of the laser. Both the bottom and top surfaces are built with solid flat bars of aluminum that is 12.7 mm thick and 101.6 mm wide, making it invulnerable to environmental conditions. The optional tripod provides "go anywhere" adjustments and leveling indication for zenith, azimuth, pitch and complete elevation control, and is supplied with a removable head.
