Toptica Photonics Inc. has introduced the iChrome MLE, a compact multilaser engine system for multicolor microscopy and cytometry applications.

The engine offers a complete OEM solution for demanding multicolor biophotonics applications. Users can select up to four different lasers covering wavelengths from 405 to 660 nm to match their specific applications. They can choose from two system versions: the iChrome MLE-S, an all-diode laser system with up to four diode lasers, or the iChrome MLE-L, which includes up to three diode lasers and a diode-pumped solid-state type.

The individual lasers are efficiently combined in a single box to yield the highest power levels and to deliver free-beam or coupled polarization-maintaining fiber (all-in-one polarization-maintaining/single-mode fiber output). Several single-mode fiber delivery wavelengths are available: 405 nm at 50 mW, 445 nm at 25 mW, 488 nm at 30 mW), 532 nm at 30 mW, 561 nm at 30 mW and 640 nm at 50 mW.

Proprietary “constant optical output level” (COOLAC) technology automatically aligns the multilaser system with the push of a button, eliminating the need for manual readjustments. COOLAC guarantees true drop-shipment capability, easy installation and good long-term operational stability. With a compact footprint measuring 201 × 250 × 110 mm for the iChrome MLE-S and 295 × 250 × 110 mm for the iChrome MLE-L, including integrated electronics, and flexible RS-232 and TCP/IP communication interfaces, the iChrome MLE is a one-box OEM solution.

The microprocessor-controlled system enables flexible OEM integration into instruments such as microscopes and flow cytometers for demanding cell biology applications that require multiple wavelengths. High-speed analog (1 MHz) and digital modulation (20 MHz) allow fast switching between laser wavelengths and intensities for minimal exposure to the sample, reducing phototoxicity and bleaching.

The COOLAC technology with push-button autorecalibration ensures good stability, even under changing ambient conditions.

The “feedback-induced noise eraser” for laser diode-based wavelengths ensures immunization to optical feedback, suitable for fiber coupling and reflective surfaces.

Typical applications include flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, total internal reflection fluorescence, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, high-throughput screening and genome analyzers.
