AFL Telecommunications is introducing its Noyes OFI-400HP, an optical fiber identifier designed to simplify installation, maintenance, rerouting or restoration tasks in high-power optical networks.

It detects traffic, tones and hazardous core power levels with low insertion loss that permits technicians to positively identify fibers without disrupting services. It also incorporates an optical power meter designed for use where power levels up to 33 dBm are present. Whenever power levels above 23 dBm are detected, the device warns users of the potential eye hazard and fiber damage associated with disconnecting, cutting or breaking the optical circuit.

It is suitable for use in long-haul, metro core and metro access networks carrying coarse wavelength division multiplexing and dense wavelength division multiplexing, analog video or other high-power signals. It can measure the high power levels present in these systems and warn users of potential safety hazards associated with the networks.

The company also offers the OFI-400, which is optimized for use with bare, buffered, ribbon and jacketed fiber, and the OFI-400C, optimized for jacketed fiber. All versions feature a proprietary optical head that eliminates the need for the array of fiber adapters required by other optical fiber identifiers, the company says.

The OFI-400HP is designed for the rigors of day-to-day field use. It features rugged construction and includes built-in automatic self-test capability. Its compact size makes it easy to use in crowded fiber trays, racks and conduits.
