Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has added model VSC7216-02 to its family of CMOS serial communications integrated circuits (ICs). The device is a quad multigigabit interconnect IC that consumes 700 mW, reducing power supply requirements by 2 W over standard transceivers. It is suitable for Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel switches, routers and backplanes where up to 1.36-Gb/s data transfer is required. The device performs optional 8- and 10-B encoding and decoding, as well as serialization and deserialization at data rates between 0.98 and 1.36 Gb/s per channel.
