Lightwaves2020 Inc. has launched an erbium-doped fiber amplifier in a compact (40 x 70 x 12 mm) module, with a pump laser that does not require cooling. In the C-band, it can amplify from one to four channels with a 100-GHz ITU-T grid or one to eight with a 50-GHz ITU-T grid. It can serve as a booster amplifier, providing power at transmission or optical compensation sites, or as a preamplifier, bolstering weak signals before they enter the optical receiver. The company says that it features low power dissipation over a broad temperature range, high small-signal gain and low noise for the preamplifier, and moderate saturated output for the booster amplifier. An optional gain block and fully functional amplet enable users to customize the device.
