Custom-engineered sapphire optical domes that protect electronic detectors and sensors from harsh environments are available from Meller Optics Inc. Angles up to 160° extend the viewing angle and protect against exposure to moving particles. Made to specification with outside diameters of up to 4 in., the domes exhibit Moh 9 surface hardness with a scratch-dig of 20-10, and wall thickness variation of <25 µm. The domes transmit from the UV to the IR, and provide up to 85% transmission uncoated and up to 99% transmission with AR coatings on two sides.
