A zirconia-phosphate machinable ceramic for the production of high-temperature heaters, brazing fixtures, induction liners, wafer chucks, optical stands and combustion nozzles for applications to 1550 °C is being offered by Aremco Products Inc. Aremcolox 502-1550-MD's low coefficient of thermal expansion protects parts from thermal shock. Available in 1/2- to 2 1/2-in.-diameter rods and plates from 1/4 to 1 in. thick, the ceramic is machined using carbide or diamond tooling, so no postfiring is required. Density is between 70% and 80%; compressive strength is 40,000 psi; and dielectric strength is 100 V/mil. The company says the material is completely inert, will not outgas in ultrahigh-vacuum conditions and does not react with most molten metals, salts and acids.
