Piezomechanik GmbH has introduced the LFS linear fiber stretcher, which piezoelectrically modulates the optical path length in an optical fiber without bending losses and other restrictions. The instrument's basic element is a PZT low-voltage multilayer stack to which the fiber is attached in an axial direction, similar to a strain gauge. The elements are 9 or 18 mm long and show a strain rate of 1% at 150 V (18 µm for an 18-mm element). Because of the instrument's small size, the resonance frequencies are relatively high.
