An ultracompact erbium-doped fiber amplifier gain block has been released by Lightwaves2020 Inc. Designed for single-channel or band amplification in the C-band, the device offers 10-dBm output power when used as a booster amplifier. It also provides 25-dB small-signal gain when used as a preamplifier. The amplifier measures only 30 x 50 x 8 mm and integrates a coolerless pump. The company says its compact optical design makes it suitable for use in metro and access networks.
