A 1310-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diode that can be volume manufactured has been unveiled by Infineon Technologies AG. It allows for transmission distances of up to 10 km and operates in a small-form-factor pluggable transceiver module at 2.5 Gb/s. The combination could enable optical device manufacturers to design cost-saving technology for data- and telecommunications applications. The single-mode diode has a spectral linewidth and side-mode suppression performance equivalent to or better than that of a DFB laser, according to the company. It also has low threshold and operating currents, which allow its use in low-power-consuming applications.
