EERBEEK, The Netherlands, Nov. 20 -- Avantes has expanded the features of its advanced AvaSpec spectrometer platform with the addition of AvaSpec-2048FT fast-trigger fiber optic spectrometer. Customers using laser-induced spectroscopy (LIBS) and fluorescence applications with pulsed sources now have true flexibility in controlling the timing of excitation signals and response signal measurement.
   The system has a fixed 1320-ns delay for the light source trigger, with only 21-ns jitter and a programmable delay to start the integration time of the AvaSpec-2048. This programmable delay allows the user to delay the start of the integration time from -42 ns to 2 ms in 40-ns increments with zero jitter. Integration time can also vary from 2 ms to 60 seconds. This is a vast improvement over currently available similar systems.

"Prior to developing our AvaSpec and AvaLight platforms, we asked our customers what they saw as shortcomings in products that were available at that time," said Benno Oderkerk, technical director at Avantes. "All along, our approach has been to develop flexible instrument platforms with planned innovations to meet the needs of our customers now and in the future. We are not through yet."

Aventes says this development is a major improvement for triggering applications such as LIBS and fluorescence. The flexibility of Avantes' timing control allows users to be sure that their high-speed sources and signal measurement can be properly coordinated.

"The decreased trigger delay and smaller time increments will undoubtedly improve the quality of measurements and allow users to fully utilize their excitation sources without fear of corrupting measurement of the signal response," the company said.

The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained. In other words, fluorescence is the luminescence that persists for less than about 10-8 s after excitation.
