PolaStay from General Photonics Corp. is a reset-free polarization stabilizer that suppresses noise in optical amplifiers, reduces the effects of polarization-dependent loss, demultiplexes polarization division multiplexed channels and eliminates polarization fading in coherent communications and fiber sensor systems. Comprising the controller, an in-line monitor and a proprietary algorithm, the system actively maintains a stable output state of polarization in real time, against rapid input fluctuations. Output is either single-mode fiber or polarization-maintaining fiber, with output polarization aligned to the slow axis. The stabilizer undoes state-of-polarization changes that are caused by an endlessly rotating λ/2 plate at a rate of 16π/s and typically recovers from perturbed polarization in 2 ms.
