LightTools is a revolutionary illumination design program based on interactive 3-D solid modeling, combining full optical accuracy, powerful optical and illumination analysis features, and a fully interactive graphical interface.The LightTools Optimization Module, one of four modules now available, enables automatic refinement of system performance based on user-specified criteria.Proprietary algorithms provide two optimization engines in this new module: the Noise Tolerant Optimization (NTO) engine and the Damped Least Squares (DLS) engine. The NTO engine is specifically designed to optimize performance calculated via Monte Carlo simulations. The DLS engine, using the same production-proven technology used by the AUTO optimizer in Optical Research Associates' CODE V software, efficiently handles problems based on nonsequential ray data.Complementing the power of the optimization engines in this module is the flexibility provided for problem definition. Users can specify variables, constraints and merit functions for the optimization with the ease of use that they have come to expect in LightTools. Powerful user-defined customization also is possible, based on Visual Basic and the Microsoft Component Object Model.
