The Chameleon-XR, launched by Coherent Inc., is a hands-free ultrafast laser that tunes from 720 to 980 nm and that is suitable for multiphoton excitation microscopy. The company says that the longer wavelengths enable deeper imaging into specimens, facilitate excitation of fluorophores such as YFP and DsRed, and reduce photobleaching effects. The device produces femtosecond pulses with >1 W of average output. The patented Power Pulse dispersion-balanced tuning mechanism automatically optimizes output power and pulse width at all times and at all wavelengths. A miniature closed-loop air recirculator enables access to wavelengths above 920 nm without requiring an external purge. Other applications include time-resolved photoluminescence, nonlinear spectroscopy, fluorescence up-conversion and quantum chemistry.
